Description:
The Lower East Side has been home to some of the city's most iconic restaurants, shopping venues, and architecture. The neighborhood has also welcomed generations of immigrants, from newly arrived Italians and Jews to today's Latino and Asian newcomers. This history has become somewhat obscured, however, as the Lower East Side can appear more hip than historic, with wealth and gentrification changing the character of the neighborhood. Chronicling these developments, along with the hidden gems that still speak of a vibrant immigrant identity, Joyce Mendelsohn provides a complete guide to the Lower East Side of then and now. After an extensive history that stretches back to Manhattan's first settlers, Mendelsohn offers 5 self-guided walking tours, including a new passage through the Bowery, that take the reader to more than 150 sites and highlight the dynamics of a community of contrasts: aged tenements nestled among luxury apartment towers abut historic churches and synagogues. With updated and revised maps, historical data, and an entirely new community to explore, Mendelsohn writes a brand-new chapter in an old New York story.

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 A great guide to a great neighborhood - This lovely book tells us what remains of the Lower East Side's many incarnations and takes us there. It's informative, full of surprising facts and very entertaining. Joyce Mendelsohn knows her subject well and brings out the colors of the many strata of this neighborhood's past. It reminds us of the difficulties immigrants faced in this melting pot and of the creative geniuses it gave to America and the world.

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 The book to take along - If you are visiting the Lower East Side (or the Bowery)., this is the book you need to take along. It contains a series of very well delineated walking tours, and a historical review of the areas successive incarnations. It's accessible, well organized and the right size to carry with you. I wish the author could create some European guidebooks of similar quality
Customer Review: 5 out of 5 An informative, beautifully written book! - A informative, beautifully written, wonderfully succinct, pocket-sized overview of one of the most dynamic and storied neighborhoods in American history. Very absorbing and user-friendly, it's packed with fascinating facts, helpful maps, and great pictures.
