Description: The Gift of an Ordinary Day is an intimate memoir of a family in transition-boys becoming teenagers, careers ending and new ones opening up, an attempt to find a deeper sense of place, and a slower pace, in a small New England town. It is a story of mid-life longings and discoveries, of lessons learned in the search for home and a new sense of purpose, and the bittersweet intensity of life with teenagers--holding on, letting go.
Poised on the threshold between family life as she's always known it and her older son's departure for college, Kenison is surprised to find that the times she treasures most are the ordinary, unremarkable moments of everyday life, the very moments that she once took for granted, or rushed right through without noticing at all.
The relationships, hopes, and dreams that Kenison illuminates will touch women's hearts, and her words will inspire mothers everywhere as they try to make peace with the inevitable changes in store.

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 One Of A Kind - I read this book till the wee morning hours. Couldn't put it down. Katrina writes of something I've been craving SOMEONE to write about...the transition to mother of children to mother of teenagers to mother of adults. The letting go, the struggle, the keeping the mouth shut, the trusting, the stepping back. Beautifully written. There is about 2 or 3 sentences on every single page that I wish I could frame and hang above my kitchen sink.
Customer Review: 5 out of 5 A Book You Will Never Forget! - I listened to the audio version of this book. It reminded me so much of the friends I have who have children a few years older than mine. They give you the warnings of the bumps ahead so that when your child does turn 13, you realize you haven't lost your mind (just gained a teenager) But more than that, she reminds us that this life is not a dress rehearsal.
Similar to "The Power of Now" this book affected my life immediately. Katrina seems to be sharing with us how she is learning to live in the moment and how she is able to enjoy the ordinary moments and days. So the first day I listened to it, I started doing this as well.
The other thing that she has shared is that we need to put the trials and tribulations of child rearing into perspective. She reminds us to handle the rough spots by viewing them through the long lens.
What I loved most was her stories about Henry. Things have not always come easy for him. Some kids give up or their parents lower the bar. Henry's parents never did.
I admired them for trusting their intuition about what he needed in school. (Waldorf etc.) Henry had these challenges, and they did not let them define him. Even more, they did not allow a school system to break his spirit. In the end, he blossomed into a talented a self-sufficient young man.
When I get frustrated with day-to-day life with kids, my mother will often say "These are the good old days" and it does help to be reminded that these days with our kids will come to an end. The Gift of an Ordinary Day makes this point again and again as you go through Henry's last year at home before college. I'm so glad to have this gift to remind me that I still have the pleasure of having my two boys here with me for a few more years.

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 A Sweet Reminiscence - Although my children are grown and I have grandchildren, it was a sweet read that made me recall my Ordinary Days and the special moments with my boys. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful prose that made her story so full of life's joys and pains. My daughter in law actually recommended it to me and gave me hers to read. The Gift of an Ordinary Day reminded me of my granddaughter's upcoming teen years and it was fun to refer my daughter in law to the parts of the book that describe the trials and tribulations she is in for! I have bought more copies as gifts for my friends of grandmotherly age and would recommend for moms and grandmoms alike.
