Description: A collection of 222 men's and women's monologues, 2 minutes and under. Simply the greatest audition book every published. Two hundred carefully chosen monologues for men and women, all under two minutes. All monologues are indexed by play title, author, age, and gender of character.
Description: The Ultimate Audition Book is not fancy, but it's just what the working (and aspiring) actor is looking for: a treasury of well-chosen, short monologues from many time periods and sensibilities that enable an auditioner to make a positive impression fast. What could be better? Jocelyn Beard draws on a variety of writers, including Aphra Behn, David Mamet, George Bernard Shaw, Anton Chekhov, and Samuel Beckett, with enough surprises such as Suzan-Lori Parks and Jose Echegaray thrown in to make the selections flexible for today's growing multicultural arena. The monologues are organized by century, which is perhaps not the first thing an actor considers, but there is ample material in the mix of male/female, comic/dramatic, classic/contemporary, and romantic/political roles.

Customer Review: 2 out of 5 O.K.--If you are MALE. Women, beware. - I regret buying this book. It has some pro's but the con's outweigh them by far. If you are a woman (like myself), this book is useless. Out of the 253 pages in the book, only 112 pages are "Women's Monologues." The rest are "Men's Monologues." I find this disturbing and upsetting. While I realize that the theater and film industries have been historically predominantly run by men, in this day and age, and with the book published in 1997, one would think there would be more of an equal ground. After looking through the women's monologues, I only found a few that were bordering on feasible to use for an audition, or even for practice in an acting class. Not only are many of them antiquated, but they also tend to be awkward. As a woman in her mid-twenties, it was very difficult to find age- appropriate material. Many of the monologues are geared towards women 30 -50 years old. Though many the monologues are by well known authors or from well known plays, and may be good monologues in themselves, that doesn't mean they are good for auditions. I would not recommend this book, unless you are a male in is 40's who wants to do classical monologues, or if you want to totally blow an audition. I did not find this book useful by any means. There are so many better books out there. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Customer Review: 3 out of 5 Not funny at all - I purchased this book after purchasing Vol. 4 (222 Comedy Monologues 2 Minutes & Under). It's alright, if you're not looking for any comedy. The closest it comes to is "Serio-Comic", and even those are only slightly amusing. Although it covers a great range of time periods and ages, I still get more use out of the comedic collection found in Vol. 4
Customer Review: 2 out of 5 Monologues not well-chosen - This book was a real disappointment. I am not sure if the editor was lazy or used whatever source material was the cheapest or what. Out of 100+ selection for men, maybe 3 or 4 were at all useful. There are much, MUCH better monologue anthologies out there - pass on this one and keep looking!
Customer Review: 3 out of 5 helpful..... - i would think this book would be for 25+or so actors...i looked through all the monologues and as a teenager, i didn't find a lot of them very interesting or appealing. this book is definetely not a book for beginners because a lot of the monologues are to long for a beginner.....
Customer Review: 4 out of 5 good monologhues - This book has a good range of monolugues. But if your looking to really looking to learn how to audition, set yourself apart and create your own projects, read Twelve Step Plan To Becoming An Actor In LA it's a new book and it is the most helpful book i have found in the last coujple of years.Tom Saryory NYC
