Description:
In the third edition of Howard Rosenthal’s best-selling test preparation guide for the National Counselor Examination (NCE), students get more help than ever with an expanded section on marriage and family counseling, new material on web counseling, and updated material throughout. This resource now includes over 1,050 tutorial questions/answers and a new "Final Review and Last Minute Super Review Boot Camp" section. This guide is an ideal review tool for state licensing, the NCC credential, and preparation for written and oral boards. And because the new Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE), draws from the same subject areas, the Encyclopedia is a perfect study guide for the CPCE as well. Written in a unique question/answer format, with a quick reference index, this is also an essential student reference volume for use in any counseling, social work, or human services course.

Customer Review: 3 out of 5 ok if you don't need an organized overview - The questions and answer explanations are helpful, thorough, well written, interesting and divided into 8 study sections (to match the exam) What I actually needed was an overview of the content presented in an outline or key concepts format THEN some questions to review the material. The topics, even though clustered in the 8 sections, are scattered and random and presented in such a way that retaining the information beyond 1 or 2 related questions is impossible. I felt like I was always starting from scratch and wasting valuable time. This book would be great if I could find an over-view to review first. Then follow up with this exhaustive volume of questions.
Customer Review: 5 out of 5 excellent review for NCC.LPC - I recently purchased the encyclopedia of counseling for NCC/LPC review for licensure and national certification. I would highly recommend this text as well as the CD's for a complete reveiw and prep for individuals planning to enhance their career in the field of counseling.
Customer Review: 5 out of 5 Extremely Helpful - The book is like a conversation, which makes t easy to understand and learn from. Things are explained in a way to help you remember it. I used it to study for my comps and it helped a lot. I will also use it (along with other things) to study for the NCE.
Customer Review: 5 out of 5 Just Passed My Licensing Exam! - This is a very comprehensive and, surprisingly, sort of enjoyable review. In fact, I wish other test manuals were structured in this manner. It is rather innovative, asking questions and then immediately answering the question, explaining why the correct answer is correct while the incorrect answers are not. The same material comes up repeatedly so that the reader is constantly exposed to it and eventually becomes familiar with it.
There is also a review at the end for the week before the exam which is nicely organized and is a good refresher. There is also an appendices with graphs for people who are more visual than myself.
And this book delivered results. I just passed my licensing (NCE) exam with flying colors, so what more can you ask for?
Customer Review: 4 out of 5 Definitely Helped Me Pass - Just took and passed the NCE yesterday for mental health counselor licensure in the state of Washington. According to my test results, the score required to pass was 97. The total maximum score was 160. I got a 116. I checked on the NBCC website to compare my performance to a national group of candidates who took my form of the examination. The average there is 107.92. So, I did considerably better than the average. Now, I graduated with a masters in MFT way back in 1994. I've only practiced counseling intermittently between teaching, traveling, gov't overseas jobs, etc. etc. It's only been since late 2007 that I started back in this career, and between then and now I'd taken a 5 month hiatus. So, you can understand how much actual experience I'd had and how long ago was my education. I certainly needed significant help to bring me up to parr to take the NCE. I chose the NCE over the clinical mental health counselor test because the NCE is accepted by more states (just in case I decide to move). How helpful were this encyclopedia and the CDs? First of all, let me say I know I wouldn't have passed the NCE without having studied these materials. I ordered both because I spend 3 hours everyday driving to work and back, and utilizing the time in the car listening to the CDs was a good use of time. Actually, the CDs helped a great deal, and I never considered myself to be an audio learner. Sometimes the book, although well written and easy to read, would put me to sleep. So, I listened to the CDs while shaving, showering, doing chores, and even riding my horses (I transferred the CDs onto my iPod). The second thing I want to point out is that my particular version of the NCE probably included about 50% of what is covered in Rosenthal's materials. For the other 50%, I relied on common sense, applied experience, and educated guessing. Nevertheless, I imagined to obtain a score higher than the national average. I would've been happy just to pass with a minimum score, so I'm quite pleased to have done as well as I did and I credit that to these materials. Oh, after studying Rosenthal's materials, I went back and answered all the test questions in his book and probably answered about 90% correctly. This helped me to feel confident when I sat down to take the actual NCE. Bottom line, I know I wouldn't have passed the test if I hadn't utilized both the book and the CDs. They both helped to reinforce the material in my head. I studied for a month before sitting for the NCE. Good luck to you all.
