Description:
Born on a Blue Day is a journey into one of the most fascinating minds alive today -- guided by the owner himself. Daniel Tammet is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head.

He sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. In 2004, he memorized and recited more than 22,000 digits of pi, setting a record. He has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers, much like those portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man.

Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it' s like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human -- our minds.

Born on a Blue Day - I found the book infinitely fascinating. I couldn't put it down. The way Daniel explains things makes so much sense to me. In fact, I realized that I have quite a bit in common with him. You will learn a lot about yourself and how your mind works if you read this, and you'll enjoy following the people in the book like characters in a story. Really fascinating stuff! After I read it I almost immediately ordered his second book. I highly recommend this.

Interesting, but not page-turning - The book provides rare perspective on the author's particular form of the disease, but it's anti-climatic. If you're looking for a book with a story-line that will suck you in, this isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for someone to give you clarity on what an autistic savant may see and how he may think and process things, it's a lot better than a textbook.

Interesting perspective, merely an okay read - I've been teaching for 20 years so I've ran into a few students with Asperger's Syndrome over the years. I am familiar with the condition and studied it in some depth in a class in my master's program. I was hoping it would offer a little more insight and be as interesting as the video documentaries and news programs that have covered Mr. Tammet over the years.

Alas, this read is not nearly as interesting as those presentations. I found myself skimming sections such as the three pages about his self-made game of solitaire and his detailed descriptions about number puzzles. What's left is okay, but in reality, how much can a twenty-something really say about himself that is that interesting? He's just started his life so there's not to include in a memoir.

Embracing the Wide Sky: A Tour Across the Horizons of the Mind is his current book and it sounds like it was more like I was hoping this book would be. I'll be looking into it.

Understanding autisim - This book gives a glimpse into the mind of an autistic person. Because the author can articulate his feelings and experiences,I have a much better understanding of how it might feel to live with this syndrome. As a teacher who frequently encounters children with autism, it is very helpful.
